RICHMOND — A deficit and a bit of frustration helped fuel a big Green County run, and the Dragons dropped Somerset 59-45 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic.

The Dragons, who made it to last season's championship game, trailed by five points late in the third quarter before Coach Chris Blaydes called a timeout to have a chat at McBrayer Arena.

"They took it to heart that they were being outhustled," he said. "The experience of being down in some games last year really helped us this year."

Green County responded by scoring 18 unanswered to win its eighth straight.

"We got tired, and the game got away before we could get it back," said Somerset Coach Chris Adkins, whose team turned it over seven times during the big Green run.

Kelsea Mitchell led the Dragons (14-6) with 20 points, eight rebounds and nine blocked shots.

"She did a tremendous job underneath the goal, protecting the rim," said Blaydes, whose team held the Jumpers to 23.1 percent shooting in the second half.

Behind Mitchell, the Dragons' defense shined, forcing 24 Somerset turnovers, which they turned into 25 points.

The Dragons hit 61 percent of their shots in the second half, many on fast breaks off steals (they had 19 in all), to surge ahead.

Other highlights

Owensboro Catholic 59, Bracken County 57: The Bears rallied back from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter and cut it to one point with 11 seconds to play, but Aces star Becca Greenwell made a free throw with 3 seconds left to lift Catholic (11-11).

Greenwell, a freshman who already has offers from several of the nation's top Division I programs, scored 34 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had four blocks.

Kaley Robertson added 18 points and seven rebounds.

Hannah Haight led the Bears (10-7) with 20 points and six rebounds.

No. 7 Newport Central Catholic 62, Caldwell County 32: As it has done all season, NewCath used balanced scoring and defense to shut down the Tigers in the first round.

The Thoroughbreds got 22 steals and forced 28 turnovers equaling 30 points. Mariah Tabor led the way with 12 points and six rebounds. Courtney Sandfoss had six points, seven steals and six assists in the win, the 10th in a row for NewCath, the only ranked team in the field.

Harlan 62, Whitefield Academy 47: The Lady Dragons had four players in double figures, including two with double-doubles as they ousted Whitefield in the first game of the first round.

Sarah Scruggs and Ashley Mullins led the way with 15 points each. Mullins also had 12 boards and five steals.

Anne Corey Johnson added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Harlan (13-8), which has won six of its last seven.

Lou. Holy Cross 67, Betsy Layne 53: The Cougars got 21 points, 12 rebounds and four assists from center Olivia Moore in the win, their fifth in a row. Holy Cross (18-5), which outscored Betsy Layne 28-10 in the paint, also has won eight of its last nine.

The Cats, paced by guard Taylor Hott's 19 points and six rebounds, fell to 9-6 and had a six-game win streak halted.

Murray 61, Glasgow 30: Haley Armstrong scored 15 points to lead three players in double figures for the Lady Tigers, who outscored Glasgow 37-13 in the second half.

Janssen Starks and Sian House scored 11 points each for Murray which, made 67 percent of its shots and all four three-point attempts in the second half.

Defense was the key for the Lady Tigers. They held Glasgow to 15 percent on field goal attempts. The Lady Scotties got a whopping 27 offensive rebounds but couldn't do anything with them. They were 9-for-59 from the field for the game and had only 10 second-chance points.

Haley Perkins led Glasgow with 11 points.
