Doug Barnett bought a home in Coldstream Station in part because Sandersville Elementary School was going in just a few miles away.

So Barnett wasn't too happy when he learned recently that the Fayette County school system plans to redistrict him out of Sandersville and into Booker T. Washington Academy's attendance area.

He noted during a public forum on the redistricting plan Tuesday night that his older son, now a first-grader at Sandersville, could stay there under the school system's "grandfathering" plan. But his newborn son would miss out on Sanders ville and apparently would have to attend Booker T. Washington. Sandersville has better test scores than Booker T., he noted.

Barnett was among a small number of parents who raised questions about the redistricting plan during Tuesday night's forum at Sandersville. One parent complained that she wasn't informed about the redistricting plan earlier. Others wanted assurances that the grandfathering plan wouldn't be changed.

The session was the last in a series on plans to redistrict several overcrowded Lexington elementary schools. The redistricting proposal goes before the Fayette County Board of Education next month.

Sandersville opened in 2008, but it has reached capacity, district officials say. So they want to shift part of Sandersville's attendance area to Booker T., which has room for more students.

After the session, Barnett said he was encouraged to hear that Booker T. Washington is working to boost achievement. He said his youngest son wouldn't enroll there for another six years.

"I'm more concerned than angry," he said. "I think we all just want our kids to be successful and to be able to send them to the best schools we can."

Fayette Schools Superintendent Stu Silberman said parents who missed last night's forum because they thought it was cancelled by the weather may comment by calling the central office.
