In a first-of-its-kind study, Kentucky's counties have been ranked for health factors ranging from density of liquor stores to availability of health care. Boone County in Northern Kentucky ranked best for overall health with Central Kentucky represented in the top 10 by Scott, Anderson, Woodford, Franklin and Fayette counties.

The lowest scores were found in the eastern, Appalachian regions of the state and the far western tip of the commonwealth with Wolfe County ranking last.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute recently presented findings for counties in 50 states as part of the 2010 County Health Rankings.

Boone, for example, had 8 percent of children living in poverty, an adult smoking rate of 20 percent and 15 percent saying they had poor to fair health.

Wolfe had 53 percent of children living in poverty, an adult smoking rate of 36 percent and 39 percent saying they had poor to fair health.

The survey showed some interesting anomalies.

For example, Robertson and Russell counties landed in the top spots for physical environment but had high rates of adults smoking, poor health and children living in poverty. State health officials say the information will be useful in crafting plans to stem specific problems within individual counties.
