Charles Howard Dunson Jr. of Lexington has been charged with first-degree assault after police say he attacked another man with a brick at the Catholic Action Center on Monday night.

The victim, whose name has not been released by police, suffered a "severe head injury," according to documents filed in Fayette District Court.

He was listed in critical condition at the University of Kentucky Hospital at last check, police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.

Dunson, 42, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday.

Police say Dunson told them he had been in a verbal altercation with the victim and that he hit the man with his fist and then threw the brick at him, according to the documents.
