CBS affiliate WKYT-27 reporter Dave Spencer is leading a group of Kentucky celebrities who submitted their proposed NCAA tournament brackets to the Herald-Leader. The paper received nearly 40 submissions ranging from local television personalities and restaurateurs to politicians and filmmakers with Kentucky ties.
Spencer correctly predicted the outcome of 37 of the 48 games as of Thursday afternoon. In second place with 34 correct predictions is Chris Goodman, morning co-anchor for NBC affiliate WLEX-18. Tied for third with 33 correct is local developer Phil Holoubek, who oversaw the development of the Main & Rose Lofts downtown, and Taylor Vinson, a reporter and photographer at WLEX.
In last place with just 24 correct is Drew Curtis, founder of Fark.com, who submitted two brackets. The one with just 24 correct is what he deemed a "WTF" bracket that included numerous upsets. His "no surprises" bracket has him firmly in the middle of the pack with 28 correct predictions.
Here is some trivia from the analysis of the brackets:
- Only three celebrities picked a team other than Kentucky to win it all. Former politician, and UK player for that matter, Scotty Baesler picked Syracuse to win the tournament with West Virginia beating UK in the Elite Eight. WLEX weekend sports anchor Brent Carney and restaurateur Jimmy Duggan of Duggan's in Midway both picked Kansas to beat UK in the finals.
- Only three celebrities - Spencer, WKYT reporter Victor Puente and filmmaker Jason Epperson - picked Cornell to the Sweet 16 to face Kentucky.
- No one picked the overall No. 1 seed Kansas to be bounced in the second round. In fact, only eight of the celebrities picked Kansas to not make it to the title game. Four picked the Jayhawks to lose in the Sweet 16 (Spencer, Epperson, restaurateur Wayne Masterman and former politician Scotty Baesler). WKYT evening anchor Amber Philpott picked Kansas to lose in the Elite Eight. The remainder - Goodman, Fox 56 anchor Marvin Bartlett and WLEX anchor Dia Davidson - picked the Jayhawks to lose in the Final Four.
