FRANKFORT — The Senate has tossed out of the legislative game a measure to urge the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to enshrine former University of Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hall.

The Republican-led Senate on Monday did not concur with the resolution added by the House to Senate Bill 68, which dealt with the selection of school principals.

Hall is a Democrat who sometimes speaks at fund-raisers for Democratic candidates, including Gov. Steve Beshear.

Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville, said the Hall measure was not germane to the bill and is not in order to be considered.

Asked if politics played a role in the Senate's decision, Williams said, "With Joe B. Hall, you'll have to ask him. I don't know."

Williams added: "We try not to dictate (to) entities like the Hall of Fame. If that is so, maybe the Hall of Fame might be telling us how to run the legislature."

Hall, 81, replaced legendary coach Adolph Rupp and later led the Wildcats to the national championship in 1978. The Kentucky native coached 13 seasons at UK, compiling a record of 297 wins and 100 losses.

House Concurrent Resolution 21, which also urges Hall's enshrinement, has passed the full House and a Senate committee, but the full Senate has not considered the measure.

Former UK sports information director Brooks Downing has said he nominated Hall to the Basketball Hall of Fame last fall and that the former coach will be on the current ballot.
