NICHOLASVILLE — One man was killed in a head-on collision Friday between a car and a van on U.S. 27 in north Nicholasville, police said.

The crash closed all four lanes of U.S. 27 between Catnip Hill Road and Commerce Center for several hours while officers investigated.

The driver of a green Honda, Sergiy Babiy, 26, of Lexington died at the scene of the crash, said Jessamine County Deputy Coroner Mike Riley.

The driver of the van, who was conscious after the crash, was taken to a Lexington hospital, Nicholasville police Sgt. Scott Harvey said.

About 1 p.m., the van, owned by Service Solutions Group, was southbound in the left lane and the Honda was northbound and headed into the turn lane, Harvey said.

The van driver told police that he thought the Honda was going to turn left and cross the southbound lane, but the car "continued on into southbound traffic, for whatever reason" and struck the van head-on, Harvey said.

Northbound traffic was diverted onto Catnip Hill Road before the lanes were reopened at 4:30 p.m. Southbound traffic was diverted onto Kohl's Drive, where vehicles could turn around and head back north on U.S. 27 toward Fayette County.

Harvey said the stretch of U.S. 27 where the accident happened "is a relatively high-accident area. I don't know why because it's a relatively straight stretch of road. "It is an extremely busy stretch of road because of all the businesses around. And it is 55 mph in both directions, which doesn't leave a lot of margin of error if you're not paying attention."
