A 16-year-old will be treated as an adult after being indicted on a murder charge in the Nov. 23 shooting death of another teen.

Jamar Lamont Mays, who turns 17 in June, was indicted this week by a Fayette County grand jury. Mays also was indicted on charges of tampering with physical evidence and being a minor in possession of a handgun in connection with the shooting. Ali Shalash, 17, was shot in the head.

Under Kentucky law, anyone 14 or older who uses a firearm in a crime is automatically referred to circuit court. If the person is indicted, he is treated as an adult, said Fayette Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Larson.

Mays was lodged in the juvenile detention center under a $250,000 full cash bond, according to Fayette Circuit Court records. He's being held in the juvenile center because he's under 18, according to Larson.

The shooting occurred inside a home at 2048 Dorset Drive. Shalash was shot about 2 p.m. and was pronounced dead about five hours later at University of Kentucky Hospital.

A friend of the victim said just after the shooting that Shalash had been visiting a mutual friend.

Mays is scheduled to be arraigned on April 23.
