A former Fayette County Detention Center corrections officer was arrested Wednesday on theft and misconduct charges.

Police say Justin Crawford, 41, abused his position as an officer by stealing $538 from an inmate's wallet at the Fayette County jail on April 3.

In 2006, Crawford and more than 300 other current and former jail employees were paid $1.15 million to settle a lawsuit that claimed the local government violated labor laws by not paying for overtime and depriving workers of meals and rest periods.

Crawford filed another lawsuit claiming he was the subject of retaliation for his role in the 2006 suit. On April 15, a federal jury ruled that no adverse employment actions had been taken against Crawford.

Crawford was released on bond.

Thomas Miller, Crawford's lawyer, was not available for comment.
