Chevron stations changing in Ky.

Published: May 27, 2010

Several gas stations in Lexington will take on a new look over the next month as Chevron pulls out of the market.

Chevron's move, which was announced in December, will be effective June 30 and will see the company leave 11 states in the Eastern United States, Washington, D.C., and parts of Tennessee.

The company's decision means 1,100 stations in those states — Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia — are joining with other brands. The stations accounted for 8 percent of total U.S. sales volume, the company said.

"We're just trying to better align our assets, ... playing to our strengths and optimizing our system by shrinking in some areas," said spokesman Gus Santoyo.

In Kentucky, the change is leaving station owners with decisions to make. Overall, there are 197 Chevrons and 39 Texacos in Kentucky, Santoyo said.

Texaco is a subsidiary of Chevron.

Two Chevron stations on the north end of Lexington along Broadway and Russell Cave Road are converting to Marathon.

Among others, the Chevron on Waller Drive is still working out its plans, manager Sam Patel said.

Some, though, aren't looking for another change. Georgia B. Clemons, who owns the Chevron at 2398 Nicholasville Road, has decided to go unbranded. Clemons said the bulk of her revenue comes from her auto service center instead of gasoline sales.

"I have a loyal base of customers. ... When they come through the door, I call them by their first name," she said. "I'm dependent on them, and they'll be here."

Clemons had operated under the Chevron brand for eight years and had been affiliated with Marathon for a decade before that, when she operated on Southland Drive.

"I was just sick about it when I first heard," she said of Chevron's announcement. "I've enjoyed being part of Chevron. They're a great, great company."
