Terri Krebs, the mother of recent University of Kentucky basketball player Mark Krebs, died at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday in her home in Newport, according to a release from the UK athletics department.
She was 49.
Ms. Krebs was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago and found out last summer that the disease had spread to her bones, lungs and liver.
"It's been going downhill the last couple of months," Mark Krebs told the Herald-Leader in March. "Her walking has decreased. She's not really mobile anymore. She's still fighting, but it's weighing on her a lot more than it has in the past."
Despite her struggle, Ms. Krebs was able to attend UK basketball's Senior Day on March 7, when Mark Krebs made the starting lineup for his final home game.
"To have my Mom here, with everything she's been through, I can't really describe how much it meant," Mark Krebs said at the time.
UK basketball coach John Calipari offered his condolences Wednesday.
"One of the special parts of our first year in Kentucky was being able to coach Mark and get to know him and his family," Calipari said in the UK release. "I just finished writing the foreword to Mark's upcoming book, and my words were largely inspired by Terri's memorable participation in Senior Day ceremonies. Rest in peace Terri and know that all of the Big Blue Nation is here for your family."
Funeral arrangements are pending at Dobbling, Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Bellevue.
