LexTran will charge $2 for a round trip to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, down from the previously announced $5, officials said Thursday.

The public transit service also will start a Thursday, Friday and Saturday service to the Horse Park by early August, spokesman Jill Barnett said. She said the transit service decided to make the WEG bus the same cost as its regular fares.

The shuttle will operate from LexTran's downtown Transit Center at 200 East Vine Street.

Lexingtonians who want to leave the car at home so they don't have to pay the Transit Center's $8 parking fee may take a $1 bus ride from stops near their homes to the center. When boarding the bus, a rider may request a transfer that will allow the rider to change buses at the downtown center and get on a WEG-bound shuttle bus without paying an additional fare.

WEG officials have abandoned plans for free shuttles from Coldstream Research Park on Newtown Pike and instead added parking at Spy Coast farm next to the park for $20 a day and VIP on-site parking for $100 a day.

LexTran buses will have seating capacity for 1,000 people a day round trip during the Games, which start Sept. 25 and end Oct. 10. An extra 10 buses will be on loan to LexTran during the Games, five from Northern Kentucky and five from Louisville.

"We don't anticipate taking any buses away from our regular community service," Barnett said.

During WEG, buses bound for the Horse Park will leave from downtown every 30 minutes while the events are being held, plus one hour before they start and one hour after they end.

"If we see a need that we can't handle with what is out there regularly, we will step it up and add another bus," Barnett said.
