Keeneland announced Thursday that it has cataloged 4,857 horses for its September Yearling Sale, the largest auction in the world of its kind, to be held Sept. 12-26. Of the 4,857 horses, 2,562 are colts, 2,292 are fillies and three are geldings, according to a statement. That total is down from 5,189 that were cataloged for last year's sale.

This fall's sale will feature a different format. Instead of starting on a Monday, as has been its tradition, the September sale will hold its two select sessions featuring the top-end stock on Sunday and Monday, with both sessions conducted at night. Keeneland officials hope it can recapture some of the energy and glitz that was the norm with its now-defunct July yearling sale, which was as much a social event as a major auction.
