Church's bid to open church in former Julia R. Ewan school is postponed

A hearing for Vineyard Community Church's seeking a conditional use permit to open a church in the former Julia R. Ewan Elementary School on Henry Clay Boulevard was postponed Friday until Aug. 27.

The school is located in the Fairway neighborhood where there is widespread opposition to Vineyard moving there. Neighbors say they are concerned about the church's future growth and how additional cars and traffic would impact their older neighborhood with narrow streets.

Last week the city's planning staff recommended postponement to the Board of Adjustment to give the staff the more time to understand the scale of the church's proposed ministries. Bruce Simpson, attorney for the church, said church officials are making an effort to meet with neighbors to understand and address their concerns.
