About $8.7 million has been awarded in disaster grants and loans to residents of Carter, Lewis, Madison, Pike and Rowan counties after July storms and floods, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Friday.
That total includes:
$6.2 million in housing assistance grants from FEMA.
$525,000 in "other needs" assistance to replace personal belongings and pay for medical, dental, funeral and other costs.
$1.9 million in Small Business Administration loans to households, businesses and non-profits.
Pike County has received the largest chunk of individual assistance grants, with $5.6 million awarded as of Thursday evening, said Marcia Beach, a FEMA representative who spoke at a community meeting in Regina.
Pike Judge-Executive Wayne T. Rutherford estimated the total damage caused by the July 17 storm and flash floods would reach $18 million.
Earlier estimates had been $10 million.
