FRANKFORT — Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Jack Conway said Wednesday he would be willing to participate in a Fox News debate on national TV with Republican opponent Rand Paul if Paul agreed to participate in a debate requested by NBC's Meet the Press show.
Conway also said he would like to participate in five or six televised debates throughout Kentucky with Paul.
The Paul campaign had no immediate comment on Conway's proposal. Last month, Paul, a Bowling Green eye surgeon, said he wanted to hold six debates with Conway, including one on national television via Fox News.
Conway, the state's attorney general, talked to reporters about the U.S. Senate race after he held a news conference on the work done over the past two years in the cyber crimes unit of his office.
Asked if there will be any debates in this year's U.S. Senate race, Conway said, "I sure hope so," noting that the two campaigns' managers have discussed possible debates.
Conway said Meet the Press wants to kick off its fall series of national debates with the Kentucky race, possibly in the third week of September.
"I'd be happy to do it," Conway said, adding that he's "perfectly willing" to debate Paul on Fox News with moderator Chris Wallace if Paul participates in the Meet the Press debate.
Conway noted that Paul has been a frequent guest on Fox News but canceled a confirmed appearance earlier this year on Meet the Press, only the third time a major guest has canceled to be on TV's longest running show in history. It has been on the air since Nov. 6, 1947.
