Lexington Bar Guide: Margaritaville

August 26, 2010

For some folks, a good margarita is a perfect end to the work week. These Mexican restaurants are popular among the salt-or-no-salt set.

2121 Richmond Rd., Suite 150, in Idle Hour Shopping Center. (859) 268-0723. Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sun.-Thu., 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat.

There are no surprises at Durango's, just pleasing Mexican fare and reasonably priced margaritas. Ask for a frozen margarita and you'll get a lemony-lime concoction served in a pretty moss-green tumbler. It's nothing special but is a decent drink for $3.75. And while it isn't listed on the menu, judging from the collection of liquors behind the counter, you could ask for a tequila upgrade if you'd like.

Taste: Margaritas aren't the only thing here. A selection of beers includes Tecate, Carta Blanca and Pacifico.

El Toro Cantina and Grill

1917 Nicholasville Rd. (859) 277-2255. Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Sun.-Thu., 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat.

Margaritas are the specialty drink at El Toro restaurant. Every day except Friday, the house margaritas (12 ounces for $4.99) are two for one. They come in a variety of flavors including strawberry, peach, mango, raspberry and piña colada. Interested in a little more punch? Then try the slightly more expensive — but worth it — margaritas made with Cuervo Gold or Don Julio or Tres Generaciones tequila and Grand Marnier. Frozen or on the rocks, you can't go wrong. The bar opens onto a patio dining area, perfect for warm-weather dining and drinking. Parking can be a problem because the place is often packed.

Taste: The free warm chips and fresh salsa make for a muy bueno margarita accompaniment.
