Man dies after his pickup hits coal truck

CUMBERLAND — A 20-year-old Evarts man died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision Saturday morning on U.S. 119 near Cumberland in Harlan County, Kentucky State Police said.

Police said Justin Coots was pronounced dead at the scene by Harlan County deputy coroner Jim Bush.

Police said Coots was traveling north on U.S. 119 in a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck at 7:05 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle crossed the center line of the road, struck the rear of a southbound 2009 International coal truck, crossed back over the northbound lane and hit a guard rail.

The operator of the coal truck, Chad Daniels, 39, of Baxter, was not injured, police said.
