Dalrymple's passion sets the tone for EKU

Eastern Kentucky linebacker Jordan Dalrymple led the Colonels last season with 85 tackles, which was the seventh-highest total in the Ohio Valley Conference.

  • PLAYERS TO WATCH

QB T.J. Pryor: The OVC Freshman of the Year last season, Pryor finished fourth in the league with 2,153 passing yards even though he began the season as a backup. Out of Ballard High School, Pryor also is a dual threat, having run for 269 yards and four touchdowns last season.

CB/KR Jeremy Caldwell: A pre-season All-American, Caldwell is on the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes annually to the FCS defensive player of the year. All-OVC as a sophomore last season, he tied for fourth in the FCS with seven interceptions and picked off two passes in three separate games.

DT Andrew Soucy: All-OVC senior led Eastern last season with 91/2 tackles for loss, which ranked fifth in the OVC. The native of Canton, Ga., blocked a field goal or extra point in five straight games last season. He saw action in 24 games his first two seasons, making 111/2 tackles for loss.

WR Orlandus Harris: EKU's top returning receiver, Harris made 31 grabs for 432 yards as a freshman last season. He broke onto the scene against Eastern Illinois, making five catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. He also grabbed five passes against Kentucky, gaining 97 yards.

RG Chris Krack: The lone returning starter on the offensive line, the senior has started 23 games in a row. He also appeared in all 12 games as a redshirt freshman, in 2007. Krack helped clear the way for EKU's 233-yard rushing effort in last year's season finale at Jacksonville State.

  • SCOUTING REPORT

Coach: Dean Hood (13-10 in two years at EKU)

Last season: 5-6 overall, 5-3 and tied for second place in Ohio Valley Conference

Returning starters: 14 (five offense, eight defense, one special teams)

Outlook: EKU had its streak of winning seasons snapped at 31 last year, and a pre-season poll of coaches, media and sports information directors ranks the Colonels third in the OVC. Don't be surprised if the Colonels come roaring back in 2010. Start with a 4-3 defense that returns eight starters. Don't be fooled by an offensive line that has only one returning starter, as the Colonels added three players from FCS schools that dropped football (T Derek Moore and G Kevin Brown from Hofstra, TE Matt Lengel from Northeastern) and two junior-college transfers from East Arizona (G Joe Arnason, T Bo Faauaa). EKU won back-to-back OVC titles in 2007 and 2008, squads that had 22 and 17 seniors, respectively. The lack of experience on the 2009 squad is followed by lots of know-how in 2010. Several redshirts could have an impact, including LB Zavier Foster, DE Anthony Brown, LB Ichiro Chiba and WR Justin "Jet" Williams. OVC Freshman of the Year T.J. Pryor returns to direct the spread offense.

Question marks: EKU returns its QB and receivers, but who will succeed C.J. Walker as the featured running back? H.B. Banjoman was most consistent in spring drills — a big, tough back but lacking in breakaway speed. Kyle Lumpkin, a transfer from Air Force, was limited in the spring because of injury. Aaron Bradley had limited chances in the spring for a variety of reasons. EKU seems to have answered its considerable needs on the offensive line, but will the newcomers click as a unit?

Game of the year: The first game in November, at home. Jacksonville State was 6-1 in league play last year, but ineligible for the league title. Both teams want to grab what they see as their rightful spot — the top.

Ask who's steering the ship for Eastern Kentucky's football team, and Coach Dean Hood won't hesitate to answer: linebacker Jordan Dalrymple.

A 6-foot, 227-pound senior from Chuluota, Fla., Dalrymple plays hard and commands respect, Hood says. Most importantly, he's passionate.

"He just loves the game of football, and he's a classic bang-your-head-on-the-locker, blow-snot-bubbles middle linebacker kind of guy," Hood said. "I think that's why our guys like him. He's a man's man, so to speak."

Dalrymple's uncle, Brooks, played for EKU in the late 1980s. Since he's been on campus, Jordan has played in 33 games over three seasons.

He made 26 tackles in 2006. After missing the 2007 season because of a back injury, Dalrymple made 68 tackles in 2008, then earned second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors when he was credited with a team-leading 85 tackles last year. He finished the 2009 season with at least five tackles in every game, 31/2 sacks and eight tackles for loss.

The hard hitter has a soft heart, though, when it comes to dogs. He and fianceé Amy Albaugh have a Maltese. Or, as Hood likes to say in jest, "a white little sissy dog."

When coach spotted player walking the dog this summer, "I took a picture of him and put it up on the linebackers' meeting room door," Hood said. "And the guys kind of rip him about it — 'There's our starting middle linebacker walking Fluffy.'"

The man's man laughed along with his teammates

"It's funny," he said. "It's always fun and games."

One of eight starters back on defense, Dalrymple sees good things in store for the Colonels this season.

"We have great guys up front. All the D linemen are just firing off the ball and making holes, where we can just run through and make plays," he said. "They've been doing a great job with that since spring, and it's carrying over toward the season."

When Hood talks about steering the ship, he notes that it's Dalrymple who sets the tone. He's also the guy who, during the off-season, calls his teammates out for seven-on-seven work or into the weight room.

"He's not afraid to tell the guys, 'Let's go,' and the guys respond to him," Hood said. "It's hard to find a guy that will jump one of their buddies or teammates and the guys respond instead of getting defensive and taking it personal, but he's able to pull that off."

Dalrymple says he takes his leadership role seriously, asking nothing of anyone that he's not willing to do himself. He says he expects his teammates to get on him if he's "messing up or lollygagging."

EKU's string of 31 winning seasons came to an end with last season's 5-6 finish. That pretty well ends any chance of lollygagging by Dalrymple.

"We've been to hell and back with that and we're looking to start new traditions," he said. "Get back to just good, old-fashioned EKU football, and that's playing hard-nosed, smash-in-your-mouth as hard as we can."
