  • SCOUTING REPORT

Coach: Willie Taggart (0-0 as a head coach)

Last season: 0-12 overall, 0-8 and ninth place in Sun Belt Conference

Returning starters: 20 (nine offense, nine defense, two special teams)

Outlook: Step one in turning things around from an 0-12 season is to change expectations, Taggart said. He says his players are showing that they expect to win now, and it's showing on the practice field. "I really like our football team right now, and where we've gone from spring ball to where we are today," Taggart said. "It's a big difference. You see it every single day." The Hilltoppers took their lumps as the newest Division I-A program last season, but return plenty of starters with valuable experience. Bobby Rainey, who averaged 175 all-purpose yards per game, leads the offense and special teams. Thomas Majors was the team's leading tackler last season. With four early games on the road, starting with trips to Nebraska and Kentucky, this is no "cupcake" schedule.

Question marks: Will those enhanced expectations survive when tested? "How we're going to handle adversity," Taggart said. "I thought that was something our team struggled with last year. They were in a lot of ball games and, when things got tough, we didn't respond the right way. We've been trying as a staff to put our team in those tough situations throughout the summer, throughout training camp, to where we can fight through adversity together and see it through. Once we can do that, I think we'll be fine."

Game of the year: The Hilltoppers play four of their first five games on the road. The last of those early road trips will mark their Sun Belt opener, at Florida International. This Oct. 9 game should show if WKU is ready to compete in the conference.

  • PLAYERS TO WATCH

RB/KR Bobby Rainey: A Sun Belt Conference pre-season second-team pick as a back and a returner, he is on the Paul Hornung Award watch list, an honor that goes to the most versatile player in college football. Rainey set WKU records last season as a sophomore with 2,101 all-purpose yards. He rushed 144 times for 939 yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry, averaged 175 all-purpose yards per game and had seven TDs.

DL Jared Clendenin: Another junior, Clendenin totaled 40 tackles and broke up three passes over 11 starts last season. He notched 31/2 tackles-for-loss, including a solo sack. He played in all 12 games in 2008, notching 18 tackles and blocking a kick.

LB Thomas Majors: A senior, Majors is a Phil Steele first-team All-Sun Belt pick and will play middle linebacker in WKU's 4-3 defense. He was third-team all-conference last season, leading the Toppers with 101 tackles over 11 starts.

TE Jack Doyle: Last season, Doyle made Steele's National All-Freshman team and All-Sun Belt Conference third team. He made 10 starts, finishing second on the team with 365 receiving yards, and had 37 receptions and a touchdown.

DE Quanteras Smith: As a redshirt freshman last year, Smith played in 12 games, starting twice. His first collegiate tackle, against South Florida, went for an 11-yard loss. "In the spring, as coaches, we saw the potential," Taggart said. "But this summer he really, really worked his tail off. There were days when he was out by himself working out, and he's stronger. He's a lot stronger. And he's a freak. The kid has the potential to be really, really good."

Willie Taggart's number of head coaching wins last season tied Western Kentucky's total.

Zero.

The running backs coach at Stanford the past three years, Taggart is back with his alma mater and intent on changing course from WKU's 0-12 debut as a Division I-A program.

Taggart says WKU will "compete, no matter what the situation is. Like I told our team, 'Our goal this year is to get better every single game and win our conference.' That's our expectation and what we're going to be about. I think you'll see a team that's hungry and full of energy."

One of four players to have his number retired by Western, Taggart set 11 school records and started at quarterback for four years. An All-American as a senior in 1998, he also was the Offensive Player of the Year that season for I-AA independents.

His coaching résumé includes eight (winning) years — 1999-2006 — with the Hilltoppers, working with receivers, quarterbacks, as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

He knows about turning programs around, having joined Stanford after a 1-11 season in 2006. The Cardinal went 8-4 last season, leading the Pac-10 in total offense and ranking 11th in the nation in rushing offense.

"That was a great experience, which gets me optimistic about our football team here," he said. "Just some of the things we want to do, there's a lot of similarities."

Although he obviously knows offense, that's not Taggart's first priority as boss.

"First and foremost, I don't care what team it is, I think you've got to have a really solid defense," he said. "We're going to try to put our better players on defense. I think defense wins championships and we've got to stop people."

On offense, "You'll see us be creative and try to think outside of the box a little bit, but play some sound football. We'd like to be balanced — 50-50 if we can. But it's all dictated by how the game's going."

With his first job as head coach, at his alma mater and overcoming barriers that have kept the number of African-American I-A head coaches disproportionately low, Taggart has much in which to take pride.

"Most important is that I'm representing this university," he said. "I just feel Western's done so much for me personally. I tell everyone to this day, 'Everything about me, WKU has something to do with it.' So that's first and foremost: I want to get us back to where we belong.

"The race part doesn't matter to me at all. To be honest with you, I just hope that one day we get to where (we're) all coaches and, at the end of the day, we've just got to win ball games. ... First head coaching job? I figured it was going to happen one day. It's my first; it could be my last. But I'll keep working hard to see that it's not my last and, hopefully, we can keep this thing rolling."
