Lexington police and firefighters will participate next week in a Kentucky Blood Center blood drive in honor of officer Bryan J. Durman, who was killed while on duty in April.
Police officers and firefighters normally compete in an annual blood drive, but they will cooperate this year in memory of Durman, who was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle while investigating a noise complaint on North Limestone on April 29. The drive, Sept. 7 to 9, is open to the public.
The blood center has been asked to have 500 extra units of blood available during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.
Police and firefighters will donate blood at a Bloodmobile at their headquarters. The public can donate from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 7 to 9 at the blood center's Beaumont and Andover locations. To schedule a donation in advance, go to Kybloodcenter.org.
