A former University of Kentucky basketball player's father, who was accused of scamming a Paris couple of money for season tickets, was sentenced in Bourbon Circuit Court on Tuesday to three years in prison.

Jeff Carter, the father of former center Jared Carter, was charged in Bourbon County with theft and a probation violation. He was accused in March 2008 of taking $4,800 from a couple and promising them basketball tickets.

Tuesday's sentencing comes about a month after sentencing for a case in Scott County.

In that case, Carter was sentenced to three years in prison on similar charges, defense attorney Gatewood Galbraith said. Galbraith said the sentences in Scott and Bourbon counties would run concurrently.

In Scott County, Carter was accused of issuing a check for $1,573.04 without sufficient funds. Galbraith said his client has made full restitution.

Carter did not speak during Tuesday's sentencing.

Bourbon Circuit Judge Paul Isaacs said he had considered probation, but decided against it because of Carter's history.

Carter has faced numerous theft charges in the past, including cold checks, dating as far back as 1993. He was in prison from September 1994 to 1996, and in 2003. He was paroled in March 2005.

Galbraith said the time Carter has served will be considered, and he should be up for parole soon.

Scott County's Jared Carter signed with UK in 2005 and was a member of the team for four seasons.
