Allegiant Air will be offering two weekly round trips between Blue Grass Airport and the Punta Gorda Airport near Fort Myers, Fla., beginning Nov. 18.

The announcement came at Wednesday's meeting of the Blue Grass Airport Board. Allegiant will be offering $44.99 one-way introductory fares. The fare is limited and must be purchased by Oct. 12. It's valid for travel through March 8, 2011.

Allegiant currently offers four weekly round trips to the Orlando area from Lexington and two weekly round trips to the Tampa Bay area from Lexington.

"It's one of our most requested destinations," airport spokesman Brian Ellestad said of the new route.

The carrier will use full-size 150-seat MD-80 aircraft on the route. The flights will be on Thursdays and Sundays.

"Southwest Florida is a destination that travelers in Central Kentucky will be very excited about. Allegiant's low fares and large aircraft have been well received throughout Kentucky, and we are fortunate to have them operate out of Blue Grass Airport," said Airport Executive Director Eric Frankl.

Also at Wednesday's airport board meeting, the board voted unanimously to match a $25,000 contribution that the Urban County Government is making to the memorial to the 49 victims of Comair Flight 5191, which crashed four years ago after taking off from the wrong runway at Blue Grass Airport.
