Mayor Jim Newberry met with officials of Lexington's three cab companies Sunday, after receiving what his office described as "several" complaints of overcharging by taxi drivers since the start of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Newberry said afterward that the cab company officials promised to work with the city to make sure their drivers don't overcharge visitors attending the 16-day event, which started Saturday.

The mayor said he called the meeting because "it was important to ensure the rates being charged are fair in order to protect visitors" attending the games at the Kentucky Hose Park. "The companies shared our concern and said that they would work with us," Newberry said.

Newberry met with Don Daugherty, representing Yellow Cab; Greg Kujawski; representing Mr. Taxi; and Will McGinnis, of Lex Taxi.

Yellow Cab has about 200 taxis operating in Lexington. Mr. Taxi operates about 50 cabs and Lex Taxi has 10.

Newberry's press secretary, Susan Straub, said the cab officials plan to talk with their drivers about the matter, and that the city will continue monitoring to see if there are any more complaints.

The three Lexington cab companies recently proposed a set of uniform rates for all trips between the horse park and some 67 hotels, motels and similar facilities in Fayette County. The schedule of rates range from $35 to $80 depending on the distance from the lodging facility to the horse park.

For all other trips, cab companies are sticking to their normal rates, which are on file with the city.
