Few names summon the sound and soul of a city as "Neville" does with New Orleans. It's almost like a family brand that ensures welcoming patrons of solid Crescent City funk.

Ivan Neville is part of the next generation of Neville-fortified music. Though the son of vocal giant Aaron Neville, he is no newcomer.

When Keith Richards broke away from the Rolling Stones for tours in the late '80s and early '90s, Neville got the call to be keyboardist. A decade later, he was an active touring and recording member of The Spin Doctors. Fast-forward to the 2000s, and there is Neville with his father and three uncles as a full collaborator with the mighty Neville Brothers.

Neville has recorded his own music along the way, as well. But his current project of choice is Dumpstaphunk, a thick, contemporary funk band that has been a major hit with jam-band crowds.

A studio album called Everybody Want Sum is forthcoming. But the best representation so far of what Neville, 51, can do with Dumpstaphunk is an official bootleg recording of its set at this year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

From the churchy grinds of Shake It Off to the broad bass/organ colors of Put It in the Dumpsta' to the tributes it regularly pays to rock-soul legend Sly Stone (a snippet of You Can Make It If You Try highlights the New Orleans disc), Dumpstaphfunk concocts the kind of serious groove music that does the Neville family name proud.
