A Letcher County man was charged with murder after a shooting Thursday night in Jenkins, Kentucky State Police said.

Samuel T. Collier, 32, of Jenkins was being held at the Letcher County jail. He is accused of shooting Mark Sturgill, a field maintenance engineer for KET, in the head, officials said.

Police said the shooting occurred about 8:40 p.m. Sturgill was taken to Whitesburg ARH Hospital, where he died.

Investigators did not release any other details about the shooting or the victim.

Sturgill had been employed by KET in Lexington as a field maintenance engineer and climber since 1999. He maintained the WKHA-Hazard transmitter site and assisted at other KET tower sites as well, according to a statement released by KET Friday afternoon.

"We were incredibly saddened to learn this morning of Mark's tragic death," the statement said. "He and his brother David have been vital members of the KET transmission group for many years."
