A Menifee County man died after an accident on U.S. 460 near Dog Trot Road in the county on Wednesday afternoon.

James R. Gibbins, 28, was driving his Pontiac Sunfire west when the car dropped off the roadway, according to a news release from Kentucky State Police. The car continued west and hit a culvert, causing the car to flip. Gibbins and passenger Amanda M. Vaughn, 26, both of Denniston, were ejected, according to the release.

Two girls, ages 2 years and 8 months, were in car seats in the back of the car. They suffered only minor injuries.

The Menifee County coroner pronounced Gibbins dead at the scene. Vaughn was airlifted to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, and the children were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Mount Sterling, where they were treated and released.

Vaughn was listed in fair condition at the UK hospital Wednesday night.

Officers are investigating the incident.
