Quarter by quarter: How Kentucky won

Published: November 14, 2010

First quarter

Summary: Vanderbilt, with the worst offense in the Southeastern Conference, went 61 yards on its first possession for a 3-0 lead. Kentucky was unable to establish a run game. It had first down at the Vandy 4-yard line and had to settle for a field goal.

Thumbs up: It was good to see Derrick Locke back on the field for Kentucky.

Thumbs down: UK's defense practically made Vandy look like Oregon, allowing 136 yards.

Second quarter

Summary: After Vanderbilt went ahead 6-3, UK seemed to hit stride on a 71-yard touchdown drive. But it took the Commodores only three plays to go 74 yards and take a 13-10 lead. Vandy's offense, last in the league with 267 yards a game, had 242 in the first half.

Thumbs up: Randall Cobb bulled his way through defenders for a 5-yard touchdown run.

Thumbs down: Slow start and untimely penalties for Kentucky. Sound familiar?

Third quarter

Summary: Cobb scored his second touchdown out of the Wildcat formation on a career-long 73-yard run. Cobb later reversed field several times on a 52-yard run, giving him the UK record for single-season all-purpose yards. Locke scored after that run.

Thumbs up: Randall Cobb. Randall Cobb. Randall Cobb.

Thumbs down: Not much to complain about. All phases stepped up for UK this quarter.

Fourth quarter

Summary: Kentucky failed to score from the 1-yard line but, not long after that, Hartline hooked up with Chris Matthews for a beautiful 55-yard touchdown strike to put the game out of reach. Locke later sprinted for a career-long 83-yard touchdown.

Thumbs up: Kentucky is bowl-eligible for the fifth consecutive year.

Thumbs down: For the second straight week, there were plenty of empty seats.
