Frankfort police arrested a man Friday night who they said hit a police officer with his truck during a traffic stop on Schenkel Lane.

Officer Byron Redmon was treated and released from Frankfort Regional Medical Center after the incident Friday afternoon, police Maj. Fred Deaton said.

Russell Wheat, 49, of Frankfort, was charged with first-degree assault after he was found in a wooded area, Deaton said.

"We had an officer that stopped a suspected impaired driver," Deaton said. "The driver of that vehicle struck our officer with the vehicle."

Deaton said the driver fled, hitting another vehicle. He then left his truck and fled on foot into the wooded area near Schenkel Lane.

Wheat was being held Friday night at the Franklin County jail.
