Braden Kapteyn hit a three-run homer, but it wasn't nearly enough for the Kentucky baseball team in its season opener.

Host College of Charleston answered with four runs in the third inning and five runs in the sixth to beat the Wildcats 11-6 Friday night.

UK (0-1) will play twice more in the College of Charleston Invitational this weekend: Saturday against Marshall and Sunday against Miami (Ohio).

Kapteyn gave Kentucky a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. Neiko Johnson led off with a single and stole second, Chad Wright was hit by a pitch, and Kapteyn homered off the right-field foul pole.

Charleston regained the lead in the bottom half against UK starter Jordan Cooper. Matt Leeds, who had 21 home runs last season, hit a three-run shot to left-center, and Jose Rodriguez followed with a solo homer to make it 5-3.

UK tied it in the sixth on Michael Williams' two-run double, but Charleston got five runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning for a 10-5 lead it would not relinquish.
