No University of Kentucky signees will be playing in this year's Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic, but the game is still loaded with high school talent.
The game is set for Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. in Louisville's KFC Yum Center.
The roster includes seven McDonald's All-Americans, including Louisville recruits Wayne Blackshear and Chane Behanan. They will be joined in the Derby Festival Classic by Cardinals recruits Zach Price and Angel Nunez.
Nearly all of the players scheduled to participate are ranked among the top 100 nationally by recruiting service Rivals.com.
The players will also participate in the Night of Future Stars on Thursday, April 21, at Bellarmine University's Knights Hall.
Kentucky's four signees — Anthony Davis, Michael Gilchrist, Marquis Teague and Kyle Wiltjer — chose not to play in the Derby Festival game because they are limited to two post-season appearances in All-Star games and opted for the McDonald's All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
However, Derby Festival Classic recruiting chair Dan Owens has not given up hope his game will include a future Cat.
"While we currently don't have any UK signees on the roster, we may add one with an open roster spot," he said. "Three of the undecided players in the game are being recruited by UK, so that will give the fans a chance to voice their support."
Those players are power forward Braeden Anderson, shooting guard Trevor Lacey and small forward DeAndre Daniels. The other McDonald's All-Americans in the Derby Festival Classic are Quinn Cook (Duke), Branden Dawson (Michigan State), Le Bryan Nash (Oklahoma State), Amir Williams (Ohio State) and Cody Zeller (Indiana).
"In my 25 years of recruiting players for the Basketball Classic, this is the highest-caliber roster we've ever had," Owens said. "These are future college and NBA stars who will bring a special excitement to the first Classic game played in the new arena."
Tickets ($16) are available on Ticketmaster.com or at the KFC Yum Center box office.
