FRANKFORT — The Senate approved a flurry of bills Friday morning, including a measure banning synthetic drugs commonly sold as "bath salts."

House Bill 121 now returns to the House for consideration of changes made to the bill in the Senate. If the House concurs, the measure will go to Gov. Steve Beshear for his signature or veto.

The measure bans the possession, trafficking or making of several related combinations of chemicals that go by street names such as "Hurricane Charlie" and "Red Dove."

The drugs are sold on the Internet and at gas stations and other stores as small plastic bags of white powder, misleadingly labeled as bath salts, plant food or insect repellent.

The Senate also approved and sent to the House a bill dealing with elder abuse and another dealing with drug prescriptions.

HB 52 would prohibit those convicted of abusing adults from inheriting from their victims or from serving as guardians or power of attorney for their victims.

HB 311 would permit electronic prescriptions for methamphetamine and some other restricted drugs.
