WKU rallies to beat Bat Cats with 8-run seventh

April 20, 2011

Western Kentucky rallied from five down with eight runs in the seventh inning and held on to beat Kentucky 11-8 Tuesday night in Bowling Green. Senior Taylor Black and sophomore Luke Maile hit three-run homers in the Cats' own eight-run outburst in the fourth. But the Toppers answered three innings later, scoring six of their eight runs with two out.

UK's Walter Wijas started the seventh in relief of Jordan Cooper and gave up a leadoff triple to Matt Rice, who went 4-for-5 and became WKU's all-time hits leader with 285. He also moved into a tie for the career RBI lead with his 208th on a solo shot in the fifth.

Wijas got pulled after giving up another triple and two RBI singles, but Trevor Gott (2-4) wasn't much better. He was charged with four earned runs, two walks and a balk. It took two more pitchers to retire the Toppers, and the Cats wasted a nice start by Cooper, who struck out eight.
