A Laurel County man sent his best friend a text message saying he planned to commit suicide, then shot himself in the right temple.

Russell Baker, 38, survived the attempt to kill himself and was in fair condition Monday at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

The incident happened Saturday evening in a wooded area off Marshes Branch Road, about 10 miles west of London, according to a news release from Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Baker texted his friend, whose name was not released, about his intent to shoot himself.

The friend went to the scene and also notified police, who arrived in time to hear the gun go off.

Baker was airlifted from the scene to UK.
