Lexington council votes not to shutter two pools, leave all pools open on Mondays

Published: May 13, 2011

Urban County Council voted Thursday to keep Berryhill and Constitution swimming pools open this summer and to keep all city pools open on Mondays during the regular swim season.

Mayor Jim Gray in his budget for fiscal year 2012 proposed closing the two pools permanently, plus closing all city pools on Mondays, to save money.

Eighth district councilman George Myers, in whose district Berryhill is located, said the city needs a comprehensive plan for all of its pools.

Closing any swimming pool would have a very negative impact on the park where it is located, and the parks department should take that into consideration before recommending closing any pool, he said.
