Lebanon Police Chief Joseph S. Bell died Monday during surgery, according to city officials.

Bell, 58, had been an officer with the Lebanon Police Department for 35 years, moving up through the ranks before being named chief 14 months ago, said Maj. Wally Brady.

Bell was having prostate surgery at Taylor County Regional Hospital in Campbellsville when he died during the procedure, Brady said.

Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw said Bell was a capable officer and a humble man.

"He did a very, very good job," Crenshaw said.

Funeral arrangements for Bell were not available Tuesday morning.
