Police are looking for a passenger who fled after a single-car crash that severely injured the driver.

The wreck happened about 5 p.m. on Russell Cave Road at Huffman Mill Road.

James O. Porter, 48, was driving a 1995 Oldsmobile inbound on Russell Cave when he lost control and drove off the road, according to a news release.

Porter overcorrected, causing the car to spin. Before coming to a stop on a grass embankment, the car crashed into a telephone pole, snapping it in half.

Porter was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital where he was in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

He was wearing a seat belt, police said. Drugs and alcohol were suspected factors in the crash.

Witnesses said the woman fled on foot after the crash.

"This was a severe collision and we do not know if she was injured and may need medical treatment," the release said.
