Kentucky softball coach Lawson to get new contract

June 11, 2011

On the same day Mitch Barnhart announced he's working on a contract extension for men's basketball coach John Calipari, the University of Kentucky athletics director gave a similar nod of approval to UK softball coach Rachel Lawson.

Barnhart sent out a note on his Twitter account Friday that the school has called a news conference for Monday to announce a new contract for Lawson.

No further details about the contract were available Friday. Kentucky concluded its most successful softball season in school history last month, Lawson's fourth year with the Wildcats.

Lawson led the Cats to a 40-16 record, and Kentucky advanced to the super-regional round of the NCAA Tournament, an event UK's program hosted for the first time. California eliminated the Cats 2-1 in their best-of-three series and moved on to the College World Series.

Kentucky's year included its first 40-win season, 14 consecutive weeks in the national rankings, and victories over a dozen teams ranked in the top 25.

Lawson arrived at UK from Western Kentucky University for the 2008 season and led the Cats to a 17-37 record before turning the corner. The Cats finished 34-23 in 2009 and 32-27 in 2010, advancing to the NCAA Tournament both seasons.
