Fayette school board approves new superintendent's contract

The Fayette County Board of Education approved Tom Shelton's new contract Monday night, officially making him the new county school superintendent.

Board members agreed to pay him slightly less than outgoing superintendent Stu Silberman but to provide essentially the same benefits.

Shelton, who is wrapping up his duties as superintendent of the Daviess County Schools, will take over in Lexington on Sept. 1.

Shelton will be paid $240,000 a year, according to the contract, with his first year's salary prorated because he will be starting two months into the fiscal year. Silberman made roughly $244,000 this year.

Shelton will get the same benefits as other 12-month school administrative employees, and the board will pay premiums for his medical, long-term-care and disability insurance coverage. His memberships in various professional organizations also will be covered.

Under the contract, the school board will reimburse Shelton for reasonable expenses incurred in performing his duties, and it will provide a $750-a-month automobile allowance for in-state travel associated with his job. He'll also have a cellphone provided by the school district.

According to the contract, Shelton will be entitled to 20 days of paid vacation each year.

Shelton has found an apartment in Lexington, school district officials said. He has said he'll probably live in Lexington alone for the first year, with his wife and youngest daughter following him next year. Shelton's daughter is starting her senior year in high school, and his wife is completing the final year of a contract as a counselor in Owensboro.
