Construction crews are adding an outdoor concrete stairway and ramp at Lexington's Millcreek Elementary School as part of a $9 million renovation. The stairs and ramp will connect the school building with a playground and outdoor classroom, making it easier for students to get to those facilities; they have had to walk down an unpaved hill. Children in wheelchairs had to be carried down, school district officials said.
The new ramp meets requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act. Renovation work at Millcreek and four other Lexington elementary schools will continue into 2012. The other schools are Breckinridge, Cardinal Valley, Mary Todd and Clays Mill. The projects cost a total of about $64 million.
