A 22-year-old Bluegrass Community and Technical College student from Northern Kentucky was struck and killed by a train in Lexington early Friday.

Kyle Ginnever of Lexington was struck on the track at the end of Burley Avenue, according to a news release from the Fayette County coroner's office.

Ginnever was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. The death has been ruled an accident. The cause was listed as multiple blunt-force trauma, the release said.

The Norfolk Southern train's conductor called police about 4:15 a.m., saying the train had "struck a pedestrian who was lying on the track," said Sherelle Roberts, police spokeswoman.

"I don't know if he was lying down," said Dr. Gary Ginn, the coroner. "He was in the process of coming from one side to the other, and I don't know if he tripped and fell. From what I understand, he was down."

The train was northbound through the city and already had slowed when the conductor saw Ginnever, Ginn said. "She tried to stop."

A Facebook page belonging to a Kyle Ginnever of Lexington said he was a partner in K-Squared Brewing Co. in Owenton. Photos on the site showed two young men cooking the ingredients for one of the company's beers.

The Norfolk Southern track where Ginnever was struck was the same track where a UK student was struck and killed after attending an off-campus party a little more than six years ago.

On Aug. 23, 2005, Thomas Joseph Byers III, 19, was struck and killed by a train after running away from University of Kentucky police who had responded to a party at Conn Terrace and South Limestone. He was struck on the tracks near Virginia Avenue.

UK police chief Joe Monroe said Friday that his department's records indicate no calls about off-campus parties overnight before Ginnever's death.

Funeral arrangements for Ginnever are pending.
