University of Kentucky enrollment reaches record-high of 28,098

Freshmen class earns special praise

The University of Kentucky on Tuesday announced a record enrollment for fall 2011, saying that the 4,140 students in its first-year class are the most academically accomplished ever.

Overall, UK has 28,098 students, up from 28,037 in 2010.

UK said undergraduate applications have increased 43 percent during the past five years, with more than 15,000 students applying to be freshmen this year.

UK's new students had a record-high ACT composite average of 25.5 out of a possible 36.

The average high school grade-point average was 3.63, with nearly one third of incoming freshmen ranked in the top 10 percent of their classes.

UK's total undergraduate enrollment is 20,163, up from 19,198 in 2010.

The school also has 5,327 graduate students, a drop from 5,502 in 2010. Professional student enrollment stands at 1,988, up slightly from 1,927 in 2010.
