SEATTLE — Seattle Mariners reliever Steve Delabar, a Central Hardin High School graduate who was a substitute teacher earlier during this baseball season before being signed by the Mariners, earned his first major-league victory late Wednesday night.

Seattle's Luis Rodriguez led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a solo homer off New York reliever Cory Wade, and the Mariners delayed Mariano Rivera's chase for the saves record with a 2-1 win over the Yankees.

Delabar (1-0), a 28-year-old who was out of baseball for an entire year after fracturing his pitching elbow in 2009, hit a batter to lead off the 12th inning, but settled down to retire the next three Yankees and set up Rodriguez's heroics. Delabar has played in two games since his call-up from Triple A Tacoma on Sept. 6. He's allowed no runs and has struck out two.

"Once again, just to get in there and the situation, it's a situation I've been in most of the year late in the game and coming in that situation I feel comfortable late in the game like that," Delabar said. "So to come in against the Yankees or the Royals or the Red Sox or whoever it may be, late in the game I feel comfortable. To end it like it ended, I guess it was good for me. It was a good feeling."

Rodriguez, who doubled in his previous two at-bats, golfed a 2-1 pitch from Wade (5-1) into the right-field seats and sent the Yankees off to Toronto looking to get Rivera career save No. 601 on Friday night against the Blue Jays.

New York missed a chance to gain another game on the slumping Red Sox.
