Get in the swing with a cape

Published: September 25, 2011

Leather piping along the collar, placket, pockets and storm flap add interest to this camel-colored cape, $108 from Loft.

The classic cape is back. This super versatile cover-up has cropped up through the ages, from military uniforms to prim British outerwear. But don't let visions of Nanny 911 stop you from trying out of one of the key looks for fall; this season's versions include sleek shapes and modern accents.

Capes with a slightly more structured shape are the next step after the ponchos of a few years ago.

When they appeared on runways at 2011 fall fashion shows, capes were awash in luxury fabrics. Alexander Wang revealed a design of angora and satin, and Fendi's featured fur patch pockets.

But there are plenty of styles in stores now for a variety of tastes. Urban Outfitters carries no fewer than three capes this fall. That includes a brightly colored cropped version from Pendleton ($228 at Urbanoutfitters.com) featuring bold red, yellow and stripes.

For a modern look, shop for a cape made of more than one material. The wool-blend double-breasted cape at Loft, $108, includes leather piping and marbled, horn-look buttons.

What to wear with your cape? Even though it's a more structured piece than a poncho, there's still a lot of volume. Layer the cape over skinny or straight jeans and a simple top paired with a sleek boot or maybe a flat.

And one of the best reasons to buy this trend is how easy it is to wear: Just slip it over you head and go.
