With the November signing period for high school basketball players having closed on Wednesday, University of Kentucky Coach John Calipari spoke for the first time about his signees for the class of 2012.
In a statement released by UK, here is what Calipari had to say about Willie Cauley, Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress:
Willie Cauley
Height, weight: 7-0, 215
High school: Olathe Northwest
Hometown: Olathe, Kan.
Rankings: Rivals, 39; Scout, 28; ESPN, 32; MaxPreps, 46; PrepStars, 35.
Calipari's comment: "At 7-feet tall, Willie has great feet and great hands. He's a wide receiver on the football team. When he starts zeroing in on this sport, I think people are going to be surprised at how good he really is. He's got his best basketball ahead of him."
Archie Goodwin
Height, weight: 6-4, 180
High school: Sylvan Hills
Hometown: Little Rock, Ark.
Rankings: Rivals, 12; Scout, 13; ESPN, 13; MaxPreps, 5; PrepStars, 12.
Calipari's comment: "Archie is a combo guard who can really score the ball. I love his athleticism and length. He plays kind of like Tyreke Evans, but can shoot it more consistent at this stage in his career than Tyreke could."
Alex Poythress
Height, weight: 6-7, 205
High school: Northeast
Hometown: Clarksville, Tenn.
Rankings: Rivals, 19; Scout, 16; ESPN, 17; MaxPreps, 13; PrepStars, 25.
Calipari's comment: "When Alex is at his best, because of his size and athleticism, he's as good as anybody in the country," Calipari said. "He is really athletic, and when he's got his motor running, he can score at will."
