Highlands senior quarterback Patrick Towles, who has committed to the University of Kentucky, has been named Kentucky’s Gatorade player of the year. Highlands Coach Dale Mueller said he got the news late Wednesday night.

Towles has led the unbeaten Bluebirds to the Class 4A finals where they will play Franklin-Simpson on Saturday afternoon in Bowling Green.

Towles has thrown for 3,637 yards and 41 touchdowns this season, and been intercepted only once. In his three-year career he’s passed for 7,246 yards and 72 TDs, and run for 1,596 yards and 37 TDs. He led Highlands to 5A state titles the past two years.

He is 37-1 as a starting QB. He stepped into the starting role midway through his sophomore season.

After leading the Bluebirds past Lexington Catholic in last week’s semifinals, Towles said he is “150 percent committed” to UK and that he has “a lot of trust” in Coach Joker Phillips and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks’ coach Randy Sanders’ system. “I’m excited about coming down here next year.”

Towles is the grandson of Baseball Hall of Famer and former U.S. Senator Jim Bunning
