The Laurel County Board of Education has named veteran educator Ronald "Sonny" Fentress to be interim superintendent of the southern Kentucky school district.

Fentress, a graduate of Western Kentucky University, will direct Laurel public schools' operations until the board selects a permanent replacement for former superintendent David Young.

Young resigned last month two days after being charged with drunk driving following a traffic crash on U.S. 25 in Laurel County.

Fentress, an educator for more than 40 years, is a former superintendent of the Anderson County public schools. He has been an interim superintendent in Floyd, Washington, Mercer and Pendleton counties, as well as the Eminence Independent Schools. Fentress also has worked for the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.
