A man involved in a single-vehicle wreck in Elliott County on Tuesday afternoon was arrested on multiple drug-related charges.

State police said Rufus D. Burton, 51, of Sandy Hook, hit a tree while driving a 2000 Dodge Avenger at about 3 p.m., and when troopers arrived, he seemed intoxicated and there was "a strong smell of marijuana" coming from the car, according to a news release.

Inside the car, they found a large bag containing "several baggies of marijuana, marijuana seeds, empty baggies, marijuana pipes, two sets of digital scales and a small loaded .25 caliber handgun."

Burton had a marijuana joint in a cigarette pack in his pocket, state police said.

Burton, who was not injured in the crash, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs; trafficking in marijuana (between 8 ounces and less than 5 pounds), first offense; possession of drug paraphernalia; second-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense; possession of marijuana; failure to wear a seat belt, failure to maintain required insurance; and failure to register the transfer of a motor vehicle.

Burton was transported to the Big Sandy Detention Center.
