A Berea man is charged with kidnapping and rape after he allegedly assaulted an ex-girlfriend, Kentucky State Police.

Geraldo Ortiz Jr., 29, is also charged with first-degree assault and a misdemeanor assault, state police said in a release.

The woman was leaving her home in Estill County to go to work at 4 p.m. Monday when Ortiz grabbed her from behind, police said. She was stabbed several times and then forced into a vehicle.

Ortiz drove the woman to a rural part of Madison County and raped her, then took her to his home in Berea, police said. While there, the woman was able to call 911.

Ortiz fled on foot upon learning that his ex-girlfriend had called police. He was located by Berea police a short time later.

The woman, whom police did not identify, was treated at St. Joseph-Berea for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Kentucky State Police were called to investigate because the alleged crimes occurred in multiple jurisdictions.

Ortiz was taken to the Madison County Detention Center.
