SEATTLE -- San Francisco kicker David Akers set the NFL record for most field goals in one season with his 41st, then added a 42nd for good measure on Saturday.
Akers, who played at Tates Creek High School in Lexington and for the University of Louisville, made a 44-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter on Saturday against Seattle for the record-setter.
It was his third made field goal of the game after earlier connecting from 53 and 29 yards.
In the fourth quarter, Akers connected from 39 yards with 2:57 left to give San Francisco the lead in what ended as a 19-17 win.
Akers missed a 52-yard attempt in the first quarter, just his seventh missed kick of the season. For the year, Akers is 42 of 49 on field goals.
Neil Rackers held the previous record with 40 made field goals set in the 2005 season while playing for Arizona.
